Learning Outside the Classroom

We believe that every child should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development at every age, in every grade-level, and in any circumstance. While a classroom is a student's home during the school hours, BASIS Independent Manhattan seeks to provide a framework for learning that uses surroundings and communities outside their primary learning environment, which we ultimately hope will add value to classroom learning.

Some of the ways we inspire learning outside the classroom include:

Field Trips

All students will go on 3–4 field trips throughout the year. Field trips help enable our students to construct their own learning in order to live successfully in the different environments that surround them.

Because BASIS Independent Manhattan is uniquely situated in one of the most culutrally rich and intellectually stimulating cities in the world, the city literally becomes our playground. Our teachers will utilize the Upper West Side for all of its amazing resources:

  • The Museum of Natural History
  • Central Park
  • The Guggenheim
  • Lincoln Center
  • The MET
  • The Children's Museum of Manhattan
  • Hayden Planetarium
  • And more!

Project Week

The last week of school means project week at BASIS Independent Manhattan! Project week is an opportunity for students in all grades to work with their peers on multidisciplinary projects and to pursue something they are especially passionate about.

These projects challenge our students to be cooperative learners and to function as a team; they even get to work with peers and teachers in different grade-levels to encourage cross-collaboration. We can't wait to share the amazing things our students and teachers come up with for our inagural year!

Here are just a few of the projects our incredible students have particpated in across our other campuses:

  • Developing a business plan for a company
  • Learning about the work of Paleontologists and creating fossils
  • Lobbying Congress on the HIll on the issues of their choice
  • Beautifying the campus by researching and planting gardens
